A limited edition release in celebration of the Feis Ile festival on Islay, this Bunnahabhain malt is exquisite.
Released for Feis Ile, this malt is part of a cohort of Whiskies that represent the best that the Isle of Islay has to offer.
Feis Ile takes part every year, and all of the distilleries on Islay play a big part in the celebration. Each will hold their own events and release their own bottlings to show off what they can do/ And of course every bottling will be thickly laced with peat!
This year was much the same, with all of the distilleries releasing their best and brightest. Bunnahabhain, which sits on the north of the island, released three bottlings, each very unique.
Tasting notes for the Bunnahabhain Sauternes Cask 2019 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Feis Ile Edition
Let’s take a closer look and their Sauternes Cask. This is a bottling that has been matured in a variety of casks, including five years in Sauternes hogsheads and 13 years in Bourbon casks.
For those who might not be aware, Sauternes is a type of sweet French wine and it gives Whisky a lovely sweet depth.
The nose begins with slightly sulphuric qualities and lots of fresh fruits. Apricots, peaches, apples and pears abound and are plentiful. They offer a nice bite, with a bit of earthy sweetness and a lovely tang to the overall flavour.
Notes of heavy cream and caramel add a smooth sweetness to the tang of the fruit.
The palate is brimming with fruits and brings in raisins, figs and a lot more apricots. They are juicy and ripe and go really well with the gentle note of toasted barley and wheat that comes through.
Caramel and a smoky, alighted peated note drift through, adding a bit of warmth.
The finish is slightly spicy, with more caramel and apples.
If you’re a fan of Bunnahabhain, this will not disappoint. And if you’re not a fan of Bunnahabhain, this might just convert you.
